Abstract

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of brief intervention for changing alcohol expectancies and readiness to change alcohol use in persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Design: Randomized controlled trial. Setting: 3 Level I trauma hospitals. Participants: 111 persons with documented complicated mild, moderate, or severe TBI and a history of problem alcohol or drug use, who were consecutively discharged from one of the trauma centers to a private residence, and had emerged from posttraumatic amnesia by 1 month following discharge.
