Abstract
Objective: To examine the effectiveness of functional electric stimulation (FES) in treating chronic-phase stroke. Design: Single case, longitudinal. Setting: Outpatient research facility. Participant: A hemiparetic 15-year-old boy with left middle cerebral artery (subcortical) infarct from traumatic carotid dissection. Interventions: Starting 5 months poststroke, 30 minutes of patient-controlled, physiotherapist-supervised, FES-augmented repetitive, progressively demanding motor tasks for the affected upper extremity, 3 times a week for 17 months.
