Abstract

Setting: Academic tertiary care hospital and acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Patient: A 40-year-old woman diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) and flaccid paraplegia suffering from episodes of autonomic hyperactivity. Assessment/Results: A 40-year-old woman with a remote history of ovarian cancer presented to her community hospital with a 6-day history of flu-like symptoms, followed by an ascending sensory and motor paralysis. After extensive workup, she was initially diagnosed with a T4 transverse myelitis and started on high dose steroids.
