Abstract

Objective: To determine the feasibility, effectiveness, and safety of steroid injection in alleviating sciatica and discogenic axial spinal pain.Spinal steroid injection is used to lessen sciatica and discogenic axial spinal pain for years. Local steroid nerve blocking may have a role in breaking the afferent-efferent loop at the spinal segmental level. Local steroids reduce the hyperexcitability of neurons and C-fibers. Steroids have membrane-stabilizing properties that prolong recovery time of activated sodium channels, thus reducing the neuronal firing.
