Abstract

Objective: To examine sponsorship for acute care of spinal cord injury (SCI) across various periods, characteristics, and outcomes. Design: Multicenter longitudinal study. Setting: Model Spinal Cord Injury Systems (MSCIS) throughout the United States. Participants: 12,576 patients receiving initial hospital care from 23 MSCIS between 1986 and 2004. Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures: Length of stay (LOS) and discharge disposition. Results: Private insurance was the most common sponsor, providing at least partial support for 41.6% of patients.
