Abstract

A special concern in oral and maxillofacial reconstruction is the potential exposure of grafted tissue to the external environment. Constructs used to restore defects involving the jaws, orbits, nose and ears are potentially in direct contact with the oral cavity, sinuses (maxillary, ethmoidal and frontal), nasal passages and external environment. The design of synthetic bone grafting materials should encourage the rapid development of lining tissue over the implant surface, forming a barrier to the external environment.
