Abstract
Injury of the trigeminal nerve due to inferior alveolar nerve block injections has been recognized as the second most common etiology for orofacial nerve injury referral. Of these injuries, the incidence of lingual nerve injury due to inferior alveolar block injections is twice as common as injury to the inferior alveolar nerve. The anatomic variability of the lingual nerve, as well as the relative size of the nerve to the needle in this region, makes lingual nerve damage a matter of statistical probability rather than anesthetic technique. This study will provide statistical data regarding the incidence of lingual nerve trauma due to inferior alveolar block injections.
