Abstract
Abstract Data assembled in the preceding chapters attest to the diffusion of several postcontact linguistic traits across both genetically affiliated and unaffiliated languages of the southeastern United States (SE). These include Spanish loanwords for items of acculturation (see table 9.4) and loan shifts that involve the imported referents PEACH and PIG (chapter 10). Two lingua francas of the region, Mobilian Jargon and Lingua Franca Creek, are identified as probable primary agents of diffusion. This is in accord with the findings of chapter 8 that genetically unrelated languages spoken by groups who use the same lingua franca share native terms for acculturated items mainly as a result of parallel acquisitions from the lingua franca.
