Abstract

A retrospective review of 101 consecutive microvascular free flaps was done to identify the patterns of usage, results and problems. The ages ranged from 2 to 60 years. There were 85 males and 16 females. The most common indication (82.17%) was for the replacement of extensive tissue loss caused by motor vehicle injuries. Most of the reconstructed defects were located in the lower extremity (93%) and the great majority (58.41%) involved the foot. The latissimus dorsi, the scapular, the lateral arm and the forearm flaps were used most commonly. Only 7 (6.93%) flaps were done within the first 48 h posttrauma and 35 (34.6%) of the transfers were complete within the first 2 weeks after injury. The overall success rate was 88.11%. We report our experience with the use of 101 free flaps for the reconstruction of traumatized limbs.
