Abstract

--: ST. MILDRED, BREAD STREET (TQ/333806). Excavation by M. Guterres for the Dept. of Urban Archaeology of the Guildhall Museum revealed the foundations of this Wren church which was destroyed by bombing. Wren had constructed his church on the S. and E. walls of the medieval church, refacing them in part to make the crypt walls. Otherwise he used loosely mortared layers of brick and re-used masonry. These foundations were not constructed on any firm base and in many cases were. laid over earlier .pits.
