Abstract

LONDON: GREENWICH (TQ/389773). F. Willmot and the Lewisham Natural History Society partly excavated the in-flil of a circular man-made shaft at the old Greenwich Observatory. This was thought to be a well, reputedly 120 ft. deep, used by Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal, c. 1675, for observations on the stars. The shaft was taken down to 24 ft. below ground level. In-fill material (completely unstratified) dated in the main from c. 1700 and included Chinese porcelain,' delftware, salt-glazed stoneware, combed slipware, Westerwald stoneware, to 19th-century cream-coloured earthenware. Clay tobacco pipes ranged from c. 1620 to c. 1850. The shaft has been boarded over with a view to possible further excavation, in the hope of establishing ifit isin fact Flamsteed's Well. FulIreport in Darenthis, IV (1968), Journal of the Lewisham Nat. Hist. Soc. (Lewisham Library Service).
