Abstract

ABSTRACTIn this article, the influence within librarianship of the post-industrial theorising associated with names such as Daniel Bell and Tom Stonier is highlighted. It is argued that the scholarly critique of this approach has been given insufficient recognition. It is suggested that the popularity of post-industrialism may reflect, and serve to legitimise, a move by sections within the library profession away from the cultural orientation of the mainstream library tradition towards a business—‘corporate’—approach to library services.
