Abstract

Summary A case is reported of a patient with chronic post-hepatitic cirrhosis and continuous jaundice of four years' duration, who experienced striking subjective and objective improvement, including the complete disappearance of clinical icterus after prolonged and intensive aureomycin therapy. Aureomycin was given intravenously, intramuscularly, and orally for approximately five months in a total dosage of 184 grams. The case has provided sufficient encouragement to warrant further investigation with this antibiotic. It is not suggested that aureomycin is a specific antiviral agent in hepatitis, but it is possible that some beneficial non-specific anti-viral properties may be present.
