Abstract

The incidence of black scurf and the number of sclerotia per tuber on progeny tubers increased significantly up to 4 weeks following haulm destruction. On tubers harvested 1, 4 and 8 weeks after haulm destruction and stored at 5, 10 or 15°C under low or high relative humidity, the incidence of black scurf and the number of sclerotia per tuber increased. The increase was least at 5° under low relative humidity. R. solani penetrates the periderm of tuber tissue intercellularly but does not spread beyond the phellogen, which collapses in advance of hyphal penetration. Infection through lenticels or common scab (Streptomyces scabies) lesions resulted in deeper penetration.
