Abstract

Following extensive funding for functional genomic research, the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has announced a new £33 million scheme termed ‘Exploiting Genomics’. The initiative is set to run over the next 3–5 years and proposals – the final deadline for which is the end of November – are expected to outline post genomic approaches towards the understanding and regulation of genes. Research areas of particular emphasis are those that encourage the discovery of technologies or information with important economic or quality-of-life benefits. The outcomes of the initiative are expected to be diverse, ranging from the discovery of novel drug targets to improved food safety, and from the understanding of biology-based solar technologies to the mechanisms of graft/prosthetic rejection.
