Abstract

A 15-year-old part-bred Welsh pony mare with a body condition score of 4/5 passed her placenta within the normal range of six hours after foaling. She subsequently developed postpartum metritis that resulted in severe quadripedal laminitis. The laminitis eventually resulted in delayed dehiscence, necessitating dorsal hoof wall resection in all four hooves. Eight months later she is alive and has reared her foal successfully, although ongoing remedial farriery is required to manage the consequences of this condition.
