‘Post Covid-19’ as a False Problem : A Symptomatic Reading of the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

이 논문은 코로나19 팬데믹을 하나의 증상으로서 읽으려는 시도다. 이러한 시도는 어떤 의미에서 ‘포스트 코로나’라는 문구가 거짓 문제인지 해명하는 것을 일차적인 목표로 삼고 있다. 이를 위해 나는 먼저 스피노자 철학에 기반하여 증상이라는 개념의 세 가지 의미론적 층위를 밝혀내고자 한다. 그리고 루이 알튀세르의 증상적 독해 개념에 입각하여 포스트 코로나라는 이 문구가 어떻게 무엇을 드러냄으로써 감추고, 또한 감추면서 드러내는지 설명하려고 한다. 첫째, 그것은 코로나 팬데믹이 일시적이고 우발적인 충격일 것이라는 예상 및 희망을 드러낸다. 둘째, 하지만 그것은 동시에 코로나19를 모종의 서사의 중심으로 만들고 있으며, 그러한 문구를 위험의 도래와 고난의 극복에 관한 영웅 서사와 연결시킨다. 셋째, 그것은 또한 코로나 이후의 세계를 이전의 정상적인 상태로의 복귀나 코로나 이전보다 더 나은 세계로의 전환으로 표현한다. 다른 한편, 포스트 코로나는 자신이 드러내는 것을 통해 감추고 있다. 첫째, 그것은 코로나 팬데믹이 체계에 내재적인 모순들에 대한 증상이라는 것을 감추고 있다. 둘째, 그것은 이번 코로나 팬데믹이 21세기의 첫 번째 팬데믹일 수도 있다는 사실은 감춘다. 셋째, 포스트 코로나 서사는 코로나 팬데믹 이후의 인류의 삶을 정상으로의 복귀로서 제시함으로써 현대 자본주의 구조에 내재해 있는 죽음의 경제를 체계적으로 감추고 있다. 결론적으로 이 논문은 포스트 코로나라는 거짓 문제 대신, 코로나 팬데믹 자체를 자본주의 문명의 위기에 대한 증상으로 이해할 것을 제안한다.This paper is an attempt to read the COVID-19 pandemic as a symptom. It aims at clarifying in what sense “post COVID-19” is a false problem. To this end, I would like to first uncover three semantic layers of the concept of symptom based on the Spinoza’s philosophy. And based on Louis Althusser’s concept of symptomatic reading, I would like to explain how the phrase “Post COVID-19” reveals something by concealing it and also conceals something by revealing it. First, it reveals the expectation and hope that the Pandemic will be a temporary and accidental shock. Second, however, it at the same time makes COVID-19 the center of a narrative, connecting such phrase to hero narratives about the advent and overcoming of danger. Third, it also expresses the post pandemic world as a return to its previous normal state or a transition to a better world than before. On the other hand, “Post-Covid-19” hides what it reveals. First, it hides that the pandemic is a symptom of contradictions inherent in the system. Second, it also hides the fact that the pandemic may be the first pandemic of the 21st century. Third, the post-Corona narrative systematically hides the economy of death inherent in the modern capitalist structure by presenting the life of humanity after the Pandemic as a return to its normal state. In conclusion, this paper proposes to understand the pandemic itself as a symptom of the crisis of capitalist civilization, instead of the false problem of post-COVID 19.
