This edited volume attempts to do many things, bringing together essays by various scholars on Muslims living in Europe and the United States following September 11, 2001. The scope of Muslims in the West after 9/11 is outlined briefly by the editor in a five-page introduction, critiquing earlier studies that tend to essentialize Muslims and Muslim identity without more careful attention to historical context, secularization trends, and recent work in so-called terrorist studies. Section one of the book provides a general overview of the situation of Muslims in Europe and the United States with an essay by the editor on the “securitization” of Islam in Europe, and a survey of Islam in America by Jane Smith.
