Abstract

The suggestion that the lowest-lying negative-parity states observed in the even-A Xe isotopes near N=66 are members of bands built on octupole states is tested via the study of the systematic behavior of 51− and 71− states in even-A Te, Xe and Ba isotopes. It is concluded that the behavior of 51− and 71− states of most of the lighter (N⩽72) Te, Xe and Ba isotopes is consistent with an octupole origin, and is quite distinct from the behavior of isotopes closer to stability. Measurements of B(E2; 71−→51− are suggested in order to test the nature of these bands.
