Abstract

Modern techniques developed for ultra-high pressure research are directly analogous to certain geological occurrences. Order-of-magnitude calculations using theory developed for the laboratory case indicate that pressures as high as 200 kilobars may develop locally and persist for a short time in the earth's crust. Occasionally, the prior existence of these high pressures should be detectable geologically.
