Abstract

Abstract The extent of the influence of Saharan dust on the soils in the Mediterranean area is uncertain. The geographic position of Crete is favourable for studies of Saharan dust transport and the influence this dust may have on the soil. Data on dust obervations from meteorological stations in Crete show that a considerable amount of Saharan dust passes the island. Analyses of grain-size and clay mineral composition have been made in order to identify material of eolian origin. A comparison between soil samples from Crete and eolian dust samples from the Sahara shows a similarity in clay mineral composition, particularly the high kaolinite content in both kind of samples.
