Abstract
Ferromanganese nodule (FMN) mining from the ocean floor is associateded with many difficulties: technological, law, ecological and others. The present study attempts to evaluate the possible ecological consequences of FMN mining from the Pacific Ocean floor on the basis of literature data. To evaluate the effect of FMN mining on physical, chemical and biological processes occurring in the marine environment it is necessary to know their discharge volume, composition, and physico-chemical properties. This data was obtained by the USA scientists during the experimental works for FMN mining in 1978/1/. The data on chemical composition of pore and bottom water for the study area is also available /2, 3, 4/.
