Abstract

Carbon isotope ratio analyses of 326 limestones and fossils ranging in age from Precambrian to Quaternary suggest small but possibly real variations in the carbon isotopic composition of the active exchange carbon reservoir throughout geologic time. Variation of C 13 : C 12 ratios in freshwater limestones with time may be correlated with the geologic evidence concerning the development and distribution of land plants.
