Abstract

The process of powder coating produces two kinds of waste: metal surfaces finishing sludge and waste painting powder. Before disposal, waste painting powder is sintered and converted into a solid mass. This work investigated the possibility of using waste painting powder for metal surface finishing (phosphating) sludge stabilization. Tests for heavy metal leaching from three different phosphating sludges and from sintered samples were carried out. The content of hexane soluble substances in the sludge and in the stabilized samples was also tested. The investigation has shown that waste painting powder sintering is not suitable for metal finishing sludge stabilization since due to this method the leachability of Zn was reduced by 67%, Fe – 54%, and Cu – just by 42%.
