Abstract
Possible ways in which modification of the rumen gene pool could result in increased efficiency of ruminant production are outlined. Current knowledge of basic genetics of anaerobic and facultatively anaerobic rumen bacteria is described in relation to the requirements of recombinant-DNA technology, including gene cloning, plasmid complements, possible vector systems and transformation methods. Problems of monitoring specific strains of bacteria containing heterologous genes, and their survival in the rumen, are considered.
