Abstract

The authors have developed a slitless spectrograph based on a transmission grating and tested it in observations with the 6-m telescope and the 1-m Zeiss telescope. Stars down to 16/sup m/.3 with traces of the spectra of stars down to 18/sup m/.1 are obtained in 10 min on the 6-m telescope at reciprocal dispersion 300 A/mm. The expected limiting magnitudes for stars and quasars are 20/sup m/.5 and 22 /sup m/, respectively. In the case of the 1-m telescope, reciprocal dispersion 300 A/mm, and focal length 13 m, stars down to 17 /sup m/ are observed in 2 h.
