Abstract

The application of an electrostatic ring for storage of ions with energies of several tens of keV is attractive for atomic and molecular science. The main goal of the KEK electrostatic ring is the storage of bio-molecular ions with atomic numbers of A ≈ 1000–10,000. An electron-beam cooler/target was installed in the KEK electrostatic ring for electron cooling and studying of electron-ion collisions. In accordance with simulations application of an electron cooler permits one to suppress multiple scattering of the stored ions with the residual gas atoms and thereby to increase the ion lifetime several times.
