Abstract

Flood danger on the Rhine, especially for the larger cities, has increased dramatically as a result of hydrotechnical development of the southern Upper Rhine between 1955 and 1977. Consequently, West Germany and France have planned extensive specialized flood-protection measures (construction of polders, weirs, etc.). Next to these purely technical variations and ecologically problematical variations, the Institute for Floodplains Ecology of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), West Germany, has proposed to set back the existing dams on appropriate locations, which would achieve a much more effective flood practice.
