Abstract

The temperature dependences of bulk positron annihilation parameters for pure and Fe doped YBa2Cu3O7- delta are considered in the context of temperature dependent positron trapping. Data for samples of composition YBa2(Cu1-xFex)3O7- delta with x=0.0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02 and 0.03 are reported. Shallow traps with positron binding energies of 0.06+or-0.01 eV and 0.16+or-0.01 eV were identified for samples with x<or=0.01 and x=0.02 respectively. It is demonstrated that the data in the literature can be explained qualitatively by the presence of such traps and that the initial observation of a correlation between bulk positron annihilation parameters and superconductivity was coincidental.
