Abstract
Positron annihilation lifetime and Doppler broadening energy spectra have been measured in methane physisorbed on grafoil surfaces at 77 K as a function of surface coverage (0 to 4.2 monolayers). Both surface positron lifetime and Doppler broadening S (central) parameters vary as a function of coverage. A significant increase of positronium formation is observed at coverages between one and two monolayers. The variations of positron annihilation data characterize the surface structural defect formation due to the presence of adsorbates. Applications of positron annihilation spectroscopy to study various physisorption phenomena, such as structure and phases, are discussed.
