Abstract

Positron lifetimes have been measured, as a function of temperature, in the following liquid crystalline substances: cholesteryl benzoate, cholesteryl stearate, cholesteryl myristate, and p-azoxyanisole. The value of τ2 was observed to vary at the melting point of each compound and at smectic transitions. No change in τ2 occurred at nematic isotropic and cholesteric isotropic transitions. Possible explanations for the behavior of τ2 are suggested.
