Abstract

Abstract It in shown that alkylation of the metal sulfide complexes ({itn}; 5 -C 5 H 5 )Mn(CO) 2 SRR′ ; RR′CH 3 ; RCH 3 , R′C 6 H 5 ; (η 5 -CH 3 C 5 H 4 )Mn(CO) 2 S(CH 3 ) 2 and (η 6 -C 6 H 6 )Cr(CO) 2 S(CH 3 ) 2 ; occurs at the sulfur atom and results in the formation of coordinated sulfonium cations. Spectroscopic studies show that this new ligand is strongly electron withdrawing. The coordinated sulfonium cation can be readily displaced from the metal atom by neutral ligands, however, anions cause dealkylation and formation of the original metal sulfide complexes.
