Abstract

The positive youth development (PYD) perspective is proposed as a paradigm for understanding adolescents in terms of their strengths and potential, in contrast to the perspective of understanding adolescents in terms of their deficits and problems. This entry introduces the major theories within the PYD perspective and the approaches commonly used to study PYD. It also summarizes findings that support the common propositions of the PYD perspective. Finally, it reviews the evidence on the effectiveness of PYD programs.
