Abstract

ABSTRACT Positive Psychological Interventions (PPIs) such as the gratitude letter appear to increase subjective well-being and decrease depression. Previous research suggests that cognitive changes may explain PPIs' positive effects on emotion regulation, thereby changing how individuals experience the world around them. Specifically, PPIs may produce attentional deployment and cognitive reappraisal. Preliminary research examining the influence of the gratitude letter intervention on the semantic information processing and memory produced mixed results. Though we did not find strong evidence that this PPI influences the processing or memory of negative and positive stimuli, further investigation is needed to illuminate what cognitive changes may produce the emotional regulating effects of PPIs.
