Abstract

Research supports the role of the supermarket as an important setting for consumer nutrition education. The purpose of this project was to determine the impact of kidney smart supermarket tours led by renal and supermarket Registered Dietitians on phosphorus outcomes in hemodialysis patients. Research also supports that approximately 45% of the best-selling grocery items contain phosphorus additives in addition to the naturally containing phosphorus found in foods. Each tour participant was provided with a magnifier to improve the readability of the small print label.
