Abstract
Four rats were trained on either a mult VI VI or mult VI VTN schedule for food. VTN refers to a schedule in which free food is delivered and there is no response lever available. When extinction was introduced into one component (the VTN component for that group), strong positive contrast effects were noted, i.e., there were increases in response rate in the unaltered component. These results did not support Hinson and Staddon’s (1978) behavioral competition explanation of contrast.
