Abstract

High frequency (HF) stationary capillary discharge in He/N2 mixtures at low (⩽0.5%) fractions of N2 was studied at medium pressures. In the experimental part, both electrical and spectral characteristics were recorded. On the basis of experimental results the densities of electrons and helium metastable atoms were determined and densities of and ions were estimated. The analysis showed that in the positive column the He atom is excited by electron impact with the metastable He atom. The main route of production of ions is via the Penning reaction. The proposed mechanisms explain the experimental findings.
