Abstract

A theoretical thermodynamic analysis shows that an irreversibleisothermal expansion of an ideal gas in a cylinder equipped witha piston may occur through trajectories involving a simultaneouspositive and negative entropy production. Under thesetrajectories the operation is more efficient than a reversibleexpansion between the same initial and final states. Thisunexpected behavior may be explained as a consequence of anentropy coupling between the simultaneous positive and negativeentropy production processes.
