Abstract

is entirely dependent on the surgi_cal team for his comfort and safety. The surgeon is concerned with securing adequate exposure of the operative field, the anesthetist with maintaining a good airway, and the nurse with protecting the patient from injuries that might result from poor positioning. In positioning the patient, the nurse keeps several principles in mind. To prevent interference with breathing and prevent strain on muscles, she keeps the patient's head, neck, and thorax in good alignment. Also, she sees that the weight of the patient's arms on his chest, or a gown that constricts his neck, do not interfere with respiration.
