Abstract
Certain conditions and circumstances predispose to positional asphyxia in adults and could explain the victim's failure to free themselves. Toxicological assays of autopsy specimens for drugs of abuse applying routine methods revealed negative results. Positional asphyxia after blunt head trauma under the influence of alcohol was determined as cause of death. Physical restraint is discussed separately to distinguish distinctly between fatalities with the decedent being forced into the unusual body position by third parties on the one hand and positional asphyxia as a rule implying accidental entrapment of the decedent on the hand. This entity mainly includes the sudden death of individuals brought into a restrained prone position by law enforcement authorities to overcome resistance and to incapacitate.
