Abstract

The new experimental challenges of modern μ SR require a critical review of the existing detection systems, whose limitations could be overcome by the use of position-sensitive detectors. The constraints posed by muon spectroscopy suggest silicon detectors and/or scintillating fibers as the most promising solutions. Realistic simulations using state-of-the-art Monte Carlo programs proved essential in detector optimization and in guiding prototype building.
