Abstract

The fluorescence lifetimes of phenanthrene and three of its dideutero isomers are measured in the vapor phase under isolated molecule conditions with a bandpass of 25 cm 1. The lifetimes fall in the order phenanthrene > 2,4- d 2 > 1,3- d 2 > 9,10- d 2. It is suggested that the change in lifetimes is due to a resonance mechanism of intersystem crossing.
