Abstract

Aim: A principal purpose of linguistic validation (LV) of Clinical Outcomes Assessments (COAs) is to ensure that a translation conveys the intended meaning of the source text. Source material sometimes contains terms or concepts which pose translation issues for cultural or linguistic reasons, leading to poor comprehension in various target languages. These terms or concepts need to be localized to improve comprehensibility. Localization is undertaken by linguists early in LV (and typically at the request of the language service provider (LSP)), or in response to cognitive debriefing (CD) interviews conducted with the target population.
