Abstract

Tacrolimus (or FK506) and cyclosporine are key standard immunosuppressive drugs that are widely used for prevention of rejection in kidney transplant patients. In Kenya, the number of kidney transplants continue to steadily rise and so is the use of these immunosuppressive drugs. However, little published data exists on therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for the two drugs among the kidney transplant patients in Kenya and Africa. We therefore set out to review information in our database pertaining to TDM tests done for tacrolimus and cyclosporine over a 10-year period with the aim of assessing the distribution of the drug levels in relation to the therapeutic ranges.
