Abstract
Parathyroidectomy continues to play an important role in the treatment of severe hyperparathyroidism in patients with kidney failure. Several large observational studies have demonstrated an improvement in patient outcomes after parathyroidectomy. Previous small clinical studies have suggested an increase in energy expenditure, protein-energy wasting and weight loss in patients with kidney failure and hyperparathyroidism. The benefit of parathyroidectomy on nutritional status remains largely unexplored.
