Abstract
The development of an assortment of chronic kidney diseases (CKDs) is associated with fibrosis, a maladaptive repair response characterized by excessive deposition and processing of extracellular matrix (ECM) materials, like collagen and fibronectin. Embedded within the ECM are a family of proteins called Matricellular Proteins (MCPs), which have emerged over the last 20 years as essential regulators to ECM processing and cell-ECM interactions. They also exhibit contextual expression, typically induced transiently during a normal repair process.
