Abstract

Renal cysts are usually classified as simple or complex by ultrasound (US) or computed tomography (CT). Complex cysts carry the risk for malignancy or malignant transformation over time, necessitating continued surveillance and/or removal. Tissue diagnosis of suspected cancerous cysts may not always yield reliable results. Suspected malignant complex cysts of smaller size can be ablated while larger complex cyst removal may require partial or complete nephrectomy. Both lead to a decrease in renal clearance.
