Abstract

F OR many years the guidebook situation in the United States has been far from satisfactory. The size and complexity of the country have made difficult the production of an adequate one-volume guide for the United States as a whole. The most recent Baedeker, published in I909, has had no comparable successor; and although there have been useful guides for some cities, states, or sections, there has been a need for additional volumes. The American Guide Series is now being prepared to fill this gap.
