Abstract

Besides collision avoidance and traffic monitoring, ship AIS (Automatic Identification System) information is very valuable in other fields of the shipping and logistics industry. However, it's very hard for most people in these fields to access ship AIS information directly due to high expenses. To break down the AIS information isolation, several live AIS Web systems have been developed. Most of them, however, could be further improved in the aspect of user friendliness. This paper tries to develop a new live AIS Web system, namely PortLive, to build a bridge to the ship AIS Information Island for the public. The potential applications of ship AIS information in the shipping and logistics industry as well as the main functions, the architecture and several key technologies of the system are presented in this paper. Through PortLive, users are directly accessible to the real time and historical AIS information overlaid on nautical charts, or receive multi-media notifications in a passive way. Compared to the relevant systems, better user friendliness is provided by this system.
