Abstract
Although the hand of man rests rather heavily on large parts of ‘The English Gibraltar’ — the isle of Portland — it still undoubtedly has its charms. At its southern tip is Portland Bill (SY 675686), one of the most important Ice Age exposures along the whole coastline of southern England. Between the ugly military installation (to the west of the car park) and the sea cliff there is a relict of the time when sea level was higher than today — a raised beach.
